ID Story · Tallow & Daughters

Hob was the only child of Tallow & Daughters, Chandlers, which was a joke his mother never got tired of. He learned wicking before he learned letters, and could tell the season by the smell of the tallow.

'Go to the bright districts, Hobby,' she said, and pressed a candle stub into his apron pocket for luck. 'There's nothing for you in the dark.' He went. He found work, and friends, and a life. Every month he meant to write. The stub stayed in his pocket. He never lit it. He was saving it.

In some other Umbrage, Hob never left the Tallow Market. When the lights went out, he joined the people who promised that darkness asked nothing of anyone.

He was assigned his mother's street. He put out every candle on it, one by one, with an iron snuffer, and each one was a little easier than the last. He wears ash on his forehead now. He hasn't eaten properly in months.
