Cassius Fenn wears gold on every finger and charges interest on favours. He is a debt collector, and he is very good at it, and he is very nice about it, which somehow makes it worse.

He was born in a district where children were paid in copper for running errands, and he ran more errands than anyone. The first coin he ever earned is still on a string around his neck, tarnished green. Every gold ring is a promise to that coin: never again. It is the only promise he has never broken.

In some other Umbrage, Cassius was never poor long enough to fear it. He owns half the Gilt Exchange and lends the other half money at very reasonable rates.

He accepts many forms of collateral: deeds, debts, promises, years. He keeps a ledger of souls the way other men keep stamps. It is, he insists, purely a hobby. The copper coin is in a vault now. He visits it on Sundays.
