2-1 · Notice of Audit (Story)
The Taper - Dispatch Cabin
Margery Ledge: A letter. Black envelope, silver seal. The Hush Office. How thoughtful of them to write.
Margery Ledge: 'Lanternline Company is hereby placed under audit for the unlicensed illumination of District Seven.' Signed: Grail Somner, Senior Auditor.
Cassius Fenn: Unlicensed illumination. We lit a lamp. In the dark. Where people were dying. Darling, that's practically charity.
Margery Ledge: Charity is unlicensed too. If the audit passes, they seize the barge. And the Warden. Lanterns are property.
Edda Quill: Then we need proof the cut-off was illegal. Contract ledgers for every district are kept in the Ash Archive. District Three.
Mirela Vost: ...Cinder Row.
Rook Marchetti: You know it?
Mirela Vost: I worked there. Pemberton Mutual Insurance. Six years. Fine. I'll show you the way. Don't ask me anything else.
Wren Halloway: Ooh. I drew a card for you this morning, Mirela. Want to see?
Mirela Vost: No.
Wren Halloway: ...It was Judgement. Just so you know.
2-2 · Mirela Counts (Story)
The Taper - Deck, Night
Mirela stands at the rail, counting. Lamps on the far bank. Ripples. Her own breaths.
Hob Tallow: You missed supper. I saved you a bowl.
Mirela Vost: I'm not hungry.
Hob Tallow: That's not what I asked.
Mirela Vost: ...Thank you, Hob. Put it down there. I'll eat it when I've finished counting.
Hob Tallow: Counting what?
Mirela Vost: Everything. If I count things, they're accounted for. If they're accounted for, nobody can say I lost them.
Hob Tallow: What did you lose?
Mirela Vost: A form. Six years ago. Written in crayon.
She doesn't say anything else. Hob leaves the bowl. She eats it, slowly, when he's gone.
2-3 · Cinder Row (Battle)
District 3 - Cinder Row
⚔ Syndicate Debt Hound Lv15, Syndicate Gasman Lv15, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv15
Before the battle
Gas lamps hiss on every corner here, green and sickly. Each one has a coin slot. Each one has a padlock.
Lucan Strand: Syndicate lamps. Pay by the minute. Don't pay, and it goes dark, and you find out what lives in the dark.
Nell Ashgrove: You know a lot about it.
Lucan Strand: Used to collect the coins.
???: Lucan Strand?! The Syndicate's still got a price on your head, you turncoat! And who's this? Fresh debtors?
Lucan Strand: Tell them I said hello.
After the battle
"Brass" Coyle: Hah! Good scrap! Who were those guys, Lucky?
Lucan Strand: ...Lucan.
2-4 · Coin Slot Alley (Battle)
⚔ Syndicate Gasman Lv16, Syndicate Gasman Lv16, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv16
Before the battle
A woman fumbles coins into a lamp. It stays dark. The gas-men laugh.
???: Rates went up at midnight, love. Two more pennies or the dogs come out.
Mirela Vost: Rate increases require thirty days' written notice under the Lighting Ordinance. Section nine.
???: The what?
Mirela Vost: I'll take that as a no.
After the battle
???: ...Thank you. Nobody's ever argued with them before. Not with words.
Mirela Vost: Words are the only weapon that works on paper men. The sword is for everyone else.
2-5 · Ash That Rises (Story)
District 3 - Hollis Court
A tenement, burned to the frame. Ash drifts up instead of down. The ash has shapes.
Sister Ivo: They're holding papers. All of them. Forms.
Edda Quill: Claim forms. Pemberton Mutual. 'Fire and Household.' ...Mirela.
Mirela Vost: Six years ago. A blackout. Someone knocked over a lamp. Sixty-three tenants. The families filed claims.
Mirela Vost: Policy exclusion 14-C. 'Acts of Darkness.' Damage occurring during an illumination outage is not covered. I reviewed every claim. I denied every claim.
Mirela Vost: I was promoted for it.

Mirela Vost: Then don't look at them, Doctor.
2-7 · The Lamp Mender (Story)
District 3 - Mender's Stall
A narrow stall wedged between two dead lamps. Tools, glass chimneys, coils of wick. A teenage girl with soot to her elbows is fixing a padlocked lamp from the inside.
Abby Hollis: If you're Syndicate, I already paid. If you're not, you're blocking my light.
Rook Marchetti: You're picking the lock on a Syndicate lamp.
Abby Hollis: I'm repairing a faulty valve. Which happens to be behind the lock. Which happens to fall off. Accidents.
"Brass" Coyle: I like her!
Abby Hollis: Abby Hollis. Lamp mender. Lantern people, right? Heard you lit the Tallow Market. Can you do us next?
Mirela Vost: ...
Cassius Fenn: Mirela, darling, you've gone a fascinating shade of grey.
2-8 · Hollis (Story)
District 3 - Mender's Stall
Mirela Vost: Hollis. From Hollis Court?
Abby Hollis: My mum's name was on the building. Her granddad built it. She died in the fire. I was eleven.
Abby Hollis: We filed for the insurance. Pemberton Mutual. Took me three nights to fill the form in. I did it in crayon because the pen was burnt.
Abby Hollis: Denied in four minutes. Somebody wrote 'Exclusion 14-C' in the box and a little tick. Didn't even sign it. Just a tick.
Abby Hollis: I've always wanted to meet the person who drew that tick. Just once. Just to look at them.
Mirela Vost: ...What would you say?
Abby Hollis: Don't know. Never got that far. I think I'd just want them to know my name.
Mirela opens her mouth. Closes it. Turns away.
Mirela Vost: We need directions to the Ash Archive.
Abby Hollis: Through Pemberton's old offices. I'll show you. Got a key I definitely didn't steal.
2-9 · Repossession (Battle)
⚔ Syndicate Debt Hound Lv17, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv17, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv17, Syndicate Gasman Lv17
Before the battle
The debt hounds come on chains of brass, sniffing for anyone whose payments are late. They find Abby's stall.
Abby Hollis: Oh, come ON, I paid you Tuesday!
Lucan Strand: They don't care when you paid. They care that you can.
After the battle
Abby Hollis: You lot are handy. Whoever the grey lady is, she fights like she's settling an account.
Mirela Vost: I am.
2-10 · Lucan's Collections (Story)
District 3 - Under the Gas Main
Lucan Strand: Mirela.
Mirela Vost: Strand.
Lucan Strand: I collected for the Syndicate for four years. Lamp coins. Rent. Interest. I took a widow's ring once because she was short a penny.
Lucan Strand: I don't tell people that. I'm telling you because you've got the same look I had. Like if you stop walking you'll fall through the floor.
Mirela Vost: And what did you do about it?
Lucan Strand: Gave the ring back. Took a beating for it. Left.
Lucan Strand: Doesn't fix it. But it was the first true thing I'd done in four years.
Mirela Vost: ...You should talk more often, Strand.
Lucan Strand: No.
2-11 · Gas Main (Battle)
⚔ Syndicate Gasman Lv18, Syndicate Gasman Lv18, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv18, Syndicate Gasman Lv18
Before the battle
The Syndicate cuts the gas on the whole street to smoke them out. Green flame races along the pipes.
Nell Ashgrove: It's getting warm. I hate warm.
After the battle
Abby Hollis: Whole street's dark now. Thanks, Syndicate. Real community spirit.
2-12 · Abby's Lamps (Story)
District 3 - Mender's Stall, Night
Abby works by the light of a single jar of fireflies. Edda watches her hands.
Edda Quill: You fix their lamps for free.
Abby Hollis: The Syndicate charges by the minute. I fix the valves so the minutes run slow. Nobody's noticed yet.
Edda Quill: That's theft.
Abby Hollis: That's arithmetic. Mum taught me. 'If the numbers are cruel, check who wrote them.'
Across the stall, Mirela has stopped counting.
2-13 · Claimants (Battle)
⚔ Ash Claimant Lv19, Ash Claimant Lv19, Ash Claimant Lv19, Ash Claimant Lv19
Before the battle
The ash-people of Hollis Court follow Abby. They always do. They stand around her like a family at a bedside.
???: ...0-0-4-1... 0-0-4-1...
Abby Hollis: They say that number sometimes. I don't know what it means.
Mirela Vost: It's a claim number.
After the battle
Abby Hollis: ...How do you know that?
2-14 · Four Minutes (Story)
District 3 - Hollis Court, Ruins
Mirela Vost: Claim 0041. Abigail Hollis, on behalf of Margaret Hollis, deceased. Fire and Household. Submitted in red and blue crayon.
Mirela Vost: Reviewed by M. Vost, Junior Adjuster. Four minutes. Exclusion 14-C. Denied.
Abby Hollis: ...
Mirela Vost: I didn't sign it because junior adjusters weren't allowed to sign. Just tick. I ticked it.
Abby Hollis: You.
Mirela Vost: Me.
Abby Hollis: You've been standing next to me for two days. You let me show you my stall. You let me tell you about my mum.
Mirela Vost: Yes.
Abby Hollis: Get out of my street.
Mirela goes. Nobody follows her. Not even the ash.
2-15 · Alone (Story)
District 3 - Pemberton Mutual, Lobby
An office of rotting carpet and green glass lamps. A portrait of a smiling man hangs over the main desk, slashed.
Mirela walks in alone. Her footsteps are the only sound.
Mirela Vost: 'Prudence. Diligence. Profit.' We said it twice every morning.
(The flame flickers. She isn't quite alone.)
Mirela Vost: ...Warden. You followed me.
(The flame burns steady.)
Mirela Vost: Fine. Someone should keep the record.
2-16 · Ledger Clerks (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv19, Hush Office Clerk Lv20, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv19
Before the battle
The others catch up. Cassius strolls in last, as though he'd been invited.
Cassius Fenn: Darling, storming off is wonderful theatre, but you left the rest of the cast behind.
Mirela Vost: I don't need a cast.
Cassius Fenn: No one ever does until the second act.
After the battle
Cassius Fenn: There. Debts settled. For now.
2-17 · Young Mirela (Story)
Memory - Pemberton Mutual, six years ago
The office is bright. Typewriters chatter. A young woman with a severe bob sits very straight at a very small desk.
Grail Somner: Vost. Your denial rate is ninety-six percent. The floor average is sixty.
Mirela Vost: Is that a problem, Auditor Somner?
Grail Somner: It's a promotion. You read like a blade, Vost. You find the clause in the catastrophe.
Mirela Vost: Some of the claims are very sad.
Grail Somner: Grief is just an unpriced liability. If you pay grief, you'll pay everyone. Then there's no company, and no one gets paid at all.
Mirela Vost: ...Yes, Auditor.
Grail Somner: Good girl. Tick the box.
The memory fades on the scratch of a pen.
2-18 · Typing Pool (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv20, Hush Office Clerk Lv20, Hush Office Clerk Lv21, Hush Office Clerk Lv20
Before the battle
Typewriters clatter by themselves in the dark, typing the same word over and over: DENIED.
Edda Quill: They're writing on the walls. On the ceiling. On each other.
After the battle
Sister Ivo: It stopped. Every machine in the room stopped at once.
2-19 · Her Desk (Story)
District 3 - Pemberton Mutual, Claims Floor
A small desk by the window. The nameplate still reads M. VOST. The bottom drawer is locked.
Dr. Pell: Allow me. Locks are just very small surgeries.
Inside: one form, folded in quarters. Red and blue crayon. A tick in the box.
Hob Tallow: You kept it.
Mirela Vost: I kept it. I never knew why. I told myself it was evidence. Of what, I couldn't say.
Wren Halloway: You kept it because the part of you that knew was still there, sweetie. Locked in a drawer. Waiting.
Mirela Vost: ...That's not a very good tarot reading.
Wren Halloway: That wasn't a reading. That was just true.
2-20 · The Partner's Office (Battle)
⚔ Ash Claimant Lv21, Hush Office Clerk Lv21, Ash Claimant Lv21, Hush Office Clerk Lv22
Before the battle
Mister Pemberton's office. The portrait's eyes have been scratched out. Ash claimants press against the glass like a queue.
After the battle
Edda Quill: Pemberton's own ledger. Every Hollis claim. And a note: 'Exclusion 14-C drafted at the request of the Hush Office. Compensation: preferential lighting rates.'
Mirela Vost: They wrote the clause for us. Somner wrote the clause, and taught me to use it, and then audited me for using it well.
Cassius Fenn: Darling, that's not a policy. That's a business model.
2-21 · Return to Sender (Story)
District 3 - Mender's Stall
Abby's stall is dark. She's packing tools into a crate, roughly.
Mirela Vost: I'm not here to apologise. An apology is a payment with no receipt. It's worthless to you.
Abby Hollis: Then why ARE you here?
Mirela Vost: To tell you that exclusion 14-C was written to order. By the Hush Office. Your claim should have been paid. Every Hollis claim should have been paid.
Mirela Vost: And to tell you that I'm going to the Ash Archive to file it again. Properly. With my name on it this time.
Abby Hollis: ...You can do that?
Mirela Vost: Archives accept re-filings. Nobody ever does it because nobody ever wants to be the one who signs.
Abby Hollis: ...I'm coming with you.
Mirela Vost: It's dangerous.
Abby Hollis: It's my claim.
2-22 · Archive Gate (Battle)
District 3 - The Ash Archive
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv22, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv22, Hush Office Clerk Lv22, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv22
Before the battle
Shelves of ledgers rise into the dark like cliffs. Clerks in black veils move between them in silence.
Edda Quill: ...It's beautiful. I hate that it's beautiful.
???: Visitors are not scheduled. Visitors are an irregularity. Irregularities will be corrected.
Rook Marchetti: Correct THIS!
After the battle
Edda Quill: District Seven contracts should be in the vault. Down.
2-23 · Edda's Archive (Story)
District 3 - The Ash Archive, Upper Stacks
Edda Quill: Every name in this city is written down somewhere in here. Births, debts, deaths. More truth than any church.
Mirela Vost: More lies too.
Edda Quill: Lies are truth with the wrong date on. An archivist's job is to keep both, so someone can tell the difference later.
Mirela Vost: And when nobody does?
Edda Quill: Then you do it yourself. That's why I write down everything the Warden does, Mirela. So that someday, someone reads it twice.
2-24 · The Stacks (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv23, Hush Office Clerk Lv23, Ash Claimant Lv22, Hush Office Clerk Lv23
Before the battle
The shelves move. Whole aisles slide shut like jaws.
Nell Ashgrove: The library is trying to eat us. Great. Wake me when it's chewing.
After the battle
Abby Hollis: I've never seen this many pages. All these people. And nobody reads them.
2-25 · The Re-Filing (Story)
District 3 - Filing Desk
A huge desk of black wood, a stamp the size of a fist. Mirela smooths the crayon form flat.
Mirela Vost: Claim 0041. Re-filed. Reviewer: M. Vost, formerly Junior Adjuster, presently -
Abby Hollis: Presently what?
Mirela Vost: ...Presently a Wick of the Lanternline Company. Exclusion 14-C invalid under Ordinance Section twelve. Claim: approved.
She signs her full name. It takes longer than four minutes.
Abby Hollis: ...Mirela Vost. That's a nice name, actually. Sounds like a sword.
Mirela Vost: It's a sword with very bad handwriting.
2-26 · Archive Wardens (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv23, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv23, Syndicate Debt Hound Lv23, Hush Office Clerk Lv24
Before the battle
???: A re-filing. A RE-FILING. Irregularity detected. Summon the Auditor.
After the battle
Margery Ledge: The Auditor's in the vault. Waiting, presumably.
2-27 · Debts (Story)
District 3 - Vault Stairs
Cassius Fenn: Mirela. A word, before you go down there and do something heroic.
Cassius Fenn: I collect debts for a living. Collected. The trick is that everyone thinks a debt is about money. It isn't. It's about who gets to decide what you're worth.
Cassius Fenn: Somner decided you were worth exactly as much as your denial rate. Don't let her decide again.
Mirela Vost: That's oddly sincere for you, Fenn.
Cassius Fenn: Darling, I'm always sincere. I just dress it up so it doesn't get stolen.
2-28 · Vault Stairs (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv24, Ash Claimant Lv24, Hush Office Clerk Lv24, Ash Claimant Lv24

At the bottom, a single desk under a single green lamp. A woman in black, writing.
2-29 · Senior Auditor (Battle)
⚔ Hush Office Clerk Lv24, Auditor Grail Somner Lv25, Hush Office Clerk Lv24 · Boss
Before the battle
Grail Somner: Vost. You look tired. You always did look tired when you'd made a mistake.
Mirela Vost: Somner.
Grail Somner: Lanternline. An unlicensed variable. Do you know why we cut districts off? Because a dark district costs less. No maintenance. No complaints.
Grail Somner: Darkness is cheaper to manage than poverty. It's simple accounting. I taught you that.
Mirela Vost: You taught me a lot of things. I'm about to return them. With interest.
After the battle
Grail Somner: ...Irregular. Very irregular. Take your ledger, Vost. It won't balance. Nothing you do will ever balance.
She tears a page from her own book and lets it fall into the vault's furnace grate. The ash rises. It does not stop rising.
Nell Ashgrove: Um. Guys. The ash is getting bigger.
2-30 · Every Claim (Story)
District 3 - The Burning Vault
The vault is full of desks. Rows and rows of them, lit by green bankers' lamps, every chair empty but one.
At the last desk a girl in an oversized clerk's suit is working through a stack of claims. Tick. Tick. Tick. She never looks up.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: Claim 0039. Exclusion 14-C. Denied. Claim 0040. Exclusion 14-C. Denied.
Abby Hollis: ...Mirela. That's -
Mirela Vost: Me. The year I started. Before the glasses. Before I knew what anything cost.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: You're late, Vost. Auditor Somner wants the floor at ninety-six percent by Friday.
Mirela Vost: I'm not here for Somner.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: Then you're here to sign? Junior adjusters aren't allowed to sign. That's what makes it easy.
Wren Halloway: Judgement. Not the Archive's. Yours.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: Claim 0041. Hollis. Crayon. ...Four minutes is generous.
2-31 · Ninety-Six Percent (Battle)
⚔ Junior Adjuster M. Vost Lv24 · Boss · Mirela Vost's E.G.O awakens
Before the battle
Mirela Vost: Warden. She's going to come for me. Let her.
After the battle
The junior adjuster straightens her badge and sits back down at the desk as if nothing happened. The stamp is already inked.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: Prudence. Diligence. Profit. ...Again.
Mirela Vost: She won't stop. She never stopped. I just got better at not looking.
2-32 · Reading (Story)
District 3 - The Burning Vault
Mirela Vost: She ticks. I've watched her tick for six years. Every night, behind my eyes.
Ansel Brigg: How do we beat her?
Mirela Vost: We don't. I do. She never signed a single one. That was the whole trick - nobody's name, nobody's fault.
Mirela Vost: So I'm going to read them. Every claim she denied. Out loud. With my name on the end.
Mirela Vost: ...Abigail Hollis, for Margaret Hollis. Claim 0041. Reviewed by M. Vost. Approved. Tomas Wren. 0042. Reviewed by M. Vost. Approved...
Abby Hollis: (quietly, beside her) ...Edwin Marsh. 0044. Approved.
Mirela Vost: ...You're reading too.
Abby Hollis: It's quicker with two.
2-33 · Balance Due (Battle)
⚔ Junior Adjuster M. Vost Lv26 · Boss · Mirela Vost's E.G.O awakens
Before the battle
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: Stop reading. STOP READING. If you pay grief you'll pay everyone!
Hob Tallow: Keep reading, Mirela! We've got you!
"Brass" Coyle: Nobody touches the accountant!
After the battle
The stamp drops from the girl's hand. For the first time, she looks up from the desk.
Junior Adjuster M. Vost: ...You signed them.
Mirela Vost: Every one. You can put the pen down now.
She does. Then there is only one desk, and one woman at it, reading long after the vault has gone quiet.
Ansel Brigg: ...Let her finish.
2-34 · Cinder Row Lit (Story)
District 3 - Cinder Row
Your flame catches in Cinder Row's Great Lamp. The Syndicate's padlocked gas lamps go pale beside it. Again, that small, cold gap - a name you can't find any more.
Abby Hollis: It's so bright. I forgot what the street looks like. There's a bakery! When did we get a bakery?
Lucan Strand: Always been one. Just never lit.
(Something is missing. You count, the way Mirela taught you. You come up one short.)
2-35 · Receipt (Story)
District 3 - Mender's Stall, Morning
Abby Hollis: Archive sent a notice this morning. Claim 0041. Approved. They're paying. With interest.
Mirela Vost: Good.
Abby Hollis: Doesn't make it right, you know. Doesn't bring her back.
Mirela Vost: No. It doesn't balance. Somner was right about that.
Abby Hollis: ...But it's a start. Here.
She hands Mirela a small lamp, repaired, its valve rigged to run slow.
Abby Hollis: Receipt. So you know someone read your name twice.
Mirela holds it with both hands, and for once, doesn't count anything.
2-36 · Silence Paid (Story)
The Taper - Dispatch Cabin
Margery Ledge: The District Seven ledger. Cut-off illegal, by the Office's own bylaws. The audit is void. Excellent work.
Edda Quill: There's more in here. Payments. Every month. From the Hush Office to... 'Bellmouth Diocese. For continued silence.'
Sister Ivo: ...
Rook Marchetti: Ivo? You okay? You look like you saw a ghost.
Sister Ivo: Bellmouth is where I sang. Before. ...They're paying for silence. Of course they are. Silence was always the price.
Mirela Vost: Then we collect. Together.
